Jacob City is located in Jackson County Florida at 30°53′40″N, 85°24′35″W. (30.894334, -85.409802) According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.4 km² (3.2 mi²). 8.0 km² (3.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it (4.02%) is water.

History

Jacob was and is still blessed. Jacob had a grits mill and was called Gretna at that time.

Jacob got its name from Mr. Jake Jones. Mr. Ade, Mr. Fate, Mr. Harry, and Mr. Jake Jones lived here over 250 years ago down by the railroad tracks. Mr. Jake Jones in later years moved to Graceville, Florida and was living there at the time of his death.

In the year of 1983-84, Jacob was organized as a city with a population of at least 250. This organization meeting took place at St. Mary Missionary Baptist Church under the pastor ship of Rev. George E. Bowers. Governor Bob Graham and some of his co-workers came from Tallahassee, Florida.

The first mayor of Jacob City was Rev. David S. Pittman who served for two years. The other councilmen were Mr. Willie J. Pittman, Mrs. Victoria Gray, Mrs. Addie Sue Pyles, and Mr. James A. Blount, Sr., Mrs. Cora Beechem and Mrs. Gwen Wright served as city clerks during this period.

The second mayor of Jacob City was Mr. Isaac Pittman who served for 4 years. During his administration the following served on the City Council: Mr. Willie J. Pittman, Mrs. Victoria Gray, Mr. Earl Rouhlac, and Mr. Effie D. Baldwin. Miss Lisa Russaw and Mrs. Saundrette Taylor served as City Clerk and Mrs. Cassandra White as secretary during this administration.

The third mayor of Jacob City was Rev. Riley J. Henderson who served for 16 years. The City Council has consisted of Mr. Willie J. Pittman, Mrs. Cora L. Beechem, Mrs. Ardelia Blount and Mr. Willie C. Baldwin. The City Clerk was Mrs. Saundrette Taylor and Mr. George Little was our Attorney. Our custodian was Mr. Alfonso White.

The fourth mayor was David S. Pittman, who took office in October of 2006. The City Council consist of Mrs. Jamaker Sorey, Ms. Bernice Milton, Mr. Willie C. Baldwin, Mrs. Cora L. Beechem, and Mr. Allen Henderson, Mr. Darrell Pittman, & Mr. Emmanuel Henderson. The City Clerk was Mrs. Verloria Wilson, Mrs. Eula Johnson was Clerk Assistant, the lawyer was Mr. George Little and Our custodian was Mr. Alfonso White.

The 5th mayor is Bernice Milton, who happens to be the first female mayor. She took office on April 17, 2008, after the city voted to change the city charter back to Council-Manager Form of government. The City Council consisted of Mrs. Josephine Lewis, Mrs. Cora Beechem; whom also serves as Vice-Mayor, Mr. Emmanuel Henderson, & Mrs. Ardelia Blount. Mr. Riley Henderson was City manager, Mrs. Verloria Wilson is City Clerk, Mr. Alfonso White was Custodian, and Mr. Clay Milton was the City Attorney. Bernice Milton resigned in December 2015.

The 6th Mayor was Cora Beechem and councilmembers was Josephine Lewis, Emmanuel Henderson, Ernest Hall, Donna Pittman. The city took part in the NCBA program which employed Mark Pittman and Edna Pittman who worked through this program.

Today the council consist of Felix George, Mayor; Councilwoman Josephine Lewis, Vice Mayor; Councilwoman Cora Beechem, Treasurer: Councilman Ernest Hall; and Councilwoman Donna Pittman. Rev. Carl Bailey is the City Manager, Verloria Wilson is City Clerk and Knowles & Randolph is City Attorney.

Some of the past and present achievements of Jacob City are:

  2. A City Park with 20 acres of land
  3. Homes through C.D.B.G. grant
  4. Upgraded Water System
